Damietta University Wins the Second Place in the Artificial Intelligence and Engineering Track

date:12.02.2026

Damietta University Wins Second Place in the Artificial Intelligence and Engineering Track at the First Environmental Forum of Delta Region Universities

Under the patronage of Prof. / Hemdan Rabea Elmetwalli, President of Damietta University, and the supervision of Prof./ Elmetwalli Mostafa Seleim, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, Damietta University participated in the activities of the First Environmental Forum of the Delta Region Universities Alliance.

The forum was organized by the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at Tanta University under the title “Integrating Academia, Industry, and the Labor Market”, and was held from February 10 to 11, with the participation of several public universities in the Delta region.

The Damietta University delegation included:

  • Prof. /Omnia Abdel Salam El-Batrawy, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science for Community Service and Environmental Development
  • Prof. / Moataz El-Nemr, Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture
  • Dr. Tamer Zakaria, Faculty of Computers and Artificial Intelligence
  • Dr. Mahmoud Abdel Hady, Faculty of Engineering

The forum addressed several strategic themes related to environmental sustainability and sustainable development, including:

  • Energy sustainability and smart projects
  • Artificial intelligence and engineering software
  • Community and digital innovation

In a new achievement added to its academic and scientific record, Damietta University secured second place in the Artificial Intelligence and Engineering Software track through an outstanding project entitled:

“Water Desalination Using Integrated Humidification–Dehumidification with Hydrogen Production via a Membrane Electrolyzer and Multi-Use Water Management.”

The project was presented by Team Hydrowadj, a graduation project by students of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering, Damietta University, under the supervision of Dr. Mahmoud Mahmoud Abdel Hady.

The team members were:

  • Mohamed Massaad Tawfiq Ragab
  • Menatullah Medhat Mohamed Zayan
  • Marwan Mohamed Abdel-Fattah Al-Alami
  • Hamza Yasser Ibrahim El-Bieh

The project provides an integrated engineering model for producing green hydrogen from seawater by utilizing thermal desalination technologies based on the Humidification–Dehumidification (HDH) system, integrated with a membrane electrolyzer, achieving high production efficiency.

The system relies entirely on solar energy for its operations, contributing to energy sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. It also integrates artificial intelligence software to analyze operational data, predict failures, and support preventive maintenance systems, thereby enhancing performance efficiency and extending the system’s operational lifespan.

The project contributes to:

  • Achieving zero carbon footprint
  • Supporting the national orientation toward the green economy
  • Promoting renewable energy and green hydrogen applications
  • Achieving sustainable development goals and the state’s vision in energy, water, and technological innovation

On this achievement, Prof. Hamdan Rabie El-Metwaly, President of Damietta University, expressed his sincere congratulations to the participating students for their outstanding efforts and dedication, praising their creativity and teamwork, which elevated the university’s standing in scientific forums. He also extended his thanks and appreciation to Prof./ El-Metwaly Mostafa Selim and all those involved in the forum for their significant efforts that contributed to this remarkable success.

He emphasized that this achievement reflects Damietta University’s leadership in supporting scientific innovation and applied research, and in linking university education outcomes with community and environmental issues.
