                President of the University Attends the Activities of the Clean and Renewable Energy Conference 2026 at the Damietta Landmark Bridge.

Professor Dr. Hemdan Rabie El-Metwally, President of Damietta University, attended the activities of the Damietta Clean and Renewable Energy Conference 2026, which was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Hossam El-Din Fawzi, Governor of Damietta, on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the Damietta Landmark Bridge. The conference witnessed wide participation from executive and academic leaders, as well as representatives of the public and private sectors, to discuss ways to expand the use of clean energy sources and support the transition toward a green economy.

The event was attended by Dr. Mohamed Fawzi, Deputy Governor of Damietta; Major General Mohamed Hammam, Secretary-General of Damietta Governorate; Brigadier General Mohamed Khalifa, Military Advisor to the Governorate; Professor Dr. El-Metwally Mostafa Selim, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development; a number of deans and faculty members; Mr. Hazem Fahmy, Executive Director of the Industrial Modernization Center; Mr. Yasser Khater, Head of the Central Administration of the Public Free Zone in Damietta; in addition to representatives of companies, factories, banks, and several concerned entities.

The conference activities were opened with a speech by Professor Dr. Hossam El-Din Fawzi, Governor of Damietta, who Confirms that energy conservation has become one of the most important issues affecting the present and future of the state, especially in light of current global challenges. He pointed out that the governorate seeks to implement energy-saving mechanisms and expand the use of clean alternatives, foremost among them solar energy, benefiting from Damietta’s distinguished location and high levels of sunshine throughout most of the year.

The governor explained that the conference comes within the framework of promoting green initiatives that combine economic efficiency with environmental sustainability, by presenting practical solutions to convert factories to solar energy and reduce energy costs by up to 50%, in addition to attracting green investments and enhancing direct connection to the electricity grid.

He also highlighted the importance of the role of educational institutions and companies in supporting this approach by spreading the culture of energy conservation and applying clean energy systems, expressing his hope that the conference would produce practical recommendations contributing to a qualitative leap in the use of renewable energy sources.

For his part, Professor Dr. Hemdan Rabie El-Metwally, President of Damietta University, affirmed that the university will cooperate with the governorate to support efforts to preserve clean energy, noting that Damietta University represents a scientific hub that contributes to supporting sustainable development plans by funding and promoting scientific research to address challenges facing the Egyptian state in this field.

He added that the orientation of the Ministry of Higher Education emphasizes the importance of strengthening the role of the industrial partner in supporting scientific research, achieving integration between academic institutions and the industrial sector, and stressed the importance of the conference producing strong outcomes and recommendations that support the transition toward clean energy.

Mr. Yasser Khater, Head of the Central Administration of the Public Free Zone in Damietta, also confirmed that the conference reflects the governorate’s vision in supporting the transition toward clean energy. He reviewed the concept of free zones and their role in supporting the economy, as well as the efforts of the free zone in implementing energy conservation initiatives within industrial projects.

In the same context, Mr. Hazem Fahmy, Executive Director of the Industrial Modernization Center, explained that one of the center’s key strategic goals is to support the green economy and the transition toward new and renewable energy. He presented the center’s vision and services in achieving sustainability and efficient resource utilization, including feasibility studies for solar energy projects, verification of greenhouse gas emissions reports, issuance of international renewable energy certificates, as well as supporting investors and preparing investment plans.

The conference activities included several presentations and applied models delivered by representatives of companies and industrial institutions. Mr. Mohamed Habish, Chairman of Pure Life Company, presented the company’s vision for supporting reliance on clean energy and alternative solutions in Egyptian industry, such as solar energy, emphasizing that industrial security has become directly linked to energy efficiency.

Eng. Ayman Shabka, representative of Damietta Green Ammonia Company, also spoke about the green ammonia production project, which relies on three main pillars: solar energy, wind energy, and water desalination to produce green hydrogen. He explained that the project aims to reduce natural gas consumption by up to 75% annually.

Mr. Ibrahim El-Adawy, representative of Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO), reviewed the company’s experience in implementing the photovoltaic solar energy initiative and rationalizing energy consumption within petrochemical industries. Meanwhile, Eng. Ahmed Atef, Deputy Maintenance Manager at DNM Spinning and Weaving Company, presented a model for energy-saving applications through reliance on renewable energy sources and solar power stations.

Representatives of the National Bank of Egypt also discussed the role of the banking sector in financing renewable energy and sustainability projects by offering various financing programs for factories and projects seeking to transition to clean energy, in addition to providing non-financial services such as training, consultations, and project development.

The conference also featured a panel discussion on ways to enhance cooperation between government entities, the private sector, and financial institutions to benefit from successful experiences in the field of renewable energy.

Eng. Ahmed Hafez, General Manager of Renewable Energy at North Delta Electricity Production Company, also reviewed the procedures and requirements for installing solar panels on rooftops of homes and facilities, as well as the consulting services provided by the company to customers in this field.

 

At the conclusion of the conference, the Governor of Damietta announced the conference’s recommendations, which included:

Establishing a fund to support solar energy to convert government buildings and facilities to operate on solar power.

Encouraging the industrial sector to expand the use of renewable energy sources.

Establishing a central maintenance unit to monitor the performance of solar panels and carry out periodic maintenance.

Enhancing integration between banks and the private sector to support clean energy projects.

Developing a timeline plan for utilizing facility hangars to generate solar energy.

The governor affirmed that these recommendations represent an important step toward supporting the green transition and achieving optimal energy use in a way that serves the state’s efforts to achieve sustainable development.
