The University President witnesses the success celebration of the “New Damietta Without Illiteracy” initiative

            Today, May 16, 2024, Professor Dr. Hemdan Rabie Al-Metwally, President of the University, witnessed Damietta University’s celebration of the success of the “New Damietta Without Illiteracy” initiative, which was organized by the Adult Education Center - Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs Sector, under the slogan, Yes, We Can, headed by Professor Dr. Mohamad Gomaa, Director of the Center, with the participation of deans and coordinators. Faculties of Education, Specific Education, Physical Education, and Arts, in cooperation with the General Authority for the Eradication of Illiteracy and Adult Education, headed by Professor Dr. Eid Abd Al Wahed, Head of the Executive Body of the General Authority for the Eradication of Illiteracy and Adult Education, and in the presence of Professor Nasser Hammad, Head of the Branch of the Authority for Adult Education in Damietta, Eng. Walid Al-Tamami, Member of the Senate, and Messrs. Deans, deans, heads and departments of colleges and the university’s administrative staff. This initiative came from Damietta University’s belief in its role in serving society and developing the environment, and enabling its students to communicate with society in an integrated, cohesive and interactive manner. The role of Damietta University in the field of literacy and adult education expresses this sustainable development trend in accordance with Egypt’s Vision 2030, which is the development reference for Egypt under The leadership of His Excellency President Abd Al Fattah El-Sisi. The ceremony began with the playing of the national anthem of the Arab Republic of Egypt, then listening to verses from the Holy Quran, followed by Professor Dr. Nabil Mabrouk, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Archeology for Postgraduate Studies and Research at the Faculty of Archaeology, followed by a short video review of the “New Damietta without Illiteracy” initiative. Professor Dr. Mohamad Hassan Gomaa, Director of the University’s Adult Education Center, stated that from the year 2017 until today, Damietta University laid the foundations for institutional systemic work in the field of literacy and adult education under the leadership of men who loved the university and were devoted to it, and today we celebrate the completion of the Adult Education Center in the eradication of illiteracy. He pointed out that the Adult Education Authority is the main partner with the university in the achievement system in order to achieve the ambitious visions and goals of eradicating the illiteracy of the people of Damietta within the framework of national trends. Professor Dr. Eid Abd Al Wahed, Chairman of the Literacy and Adult Education Authority, also expressed his pride in his presence at Damietta University, the scientific edifice that was able to make Damietta Governorate the first governorate to declare the existence of a city without illiteracy, which is New Damietta, declaring that an accurate database for the illiterate has been prepared to facilitate University students must reach those targeted for literacy, and urge male and female university students to adopt the doctrine of literacy as a humanitarian and religious message. He indicated that the future vision for literacy goes beyond the idea of ??eradicating alphabetical illiteracy, reaching the idea of ??eradicating cultural, digital and behavioral illiteracy in cooperation with Egyptian universities in line with the developments of the era that is moving towards digitization and artificial intelligence. Professor Dr. Hemdan Rabie Al-Metwally, President of the University, welcomed the gentlemen present at Damietta University, adding that the university’s role in serving the community is clearly demonstrated in its adoption of the mission of eradicating illiteracy, which is a challenge that the entire society must confront. Illiteracy is not just a problem in education, it is an issue that threatens the stability of society and undermines development. Sustainable goals that the Egyptian state seeks and provides all means to achieve them, stressing that the issue of literacy receives great attention and comes at the forefront of university work within the framework of the social and national responsibility of universities.
