Damietta University Commemorates the 44th Anniversary of Sinai Liberation with a Major National Celebration.
As part of its commitment to fostering national belonging and enhancing students’ awareness of their country’s history, Damietta University organized a grand celebration marking the 44th anniversary of the glorious Sinai Liberation. The event was held under the patronage and in the presence of Professor Dr. Hemdan Rabie Al-Metwally, President of the University, with the participation of Brigadier General Mohamed Mostafa Khalifa, Military Advisor to Damietta Governorate, on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at the “Farouk Shousha” Conference Hall.
The celebration was organized by the Education and Student Affairs Sector under the supervision of Professor Dr. Mohamed Abdo Ammasha, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs. It was attended by Professor Dr. Al-Metwally Mostafa Selim, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development; Professor Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hamid Shehab, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research; Colonel Ibrahim Basla, Director of the Military Education Department at the University; along with a number of faculty deans, vice deans, staff members, and students.
The event began with the playing of the national anthem of the Arab Republic of Egypt, followed by a recitation from the Holy Quran by student Marwan Massaad. The ceremony was presented by Professor Dr. Mohamed Maher Abdel Rahman, Head of the Arabic Language Department at the Faculty of Arts.
In his speech, Professor Dr. Mohamed Abdo Ammasha emphasized that the restoration of Sinai was achieved through the strength of the Egyptian Armed Forces and the determination of its people, noting that the victory resulted from a precise balance between military power and political will. He stressed that this anniversary carries an important message for youth to preserve their Homeland and protect its resources.
For his part, Professor Dr. Al-Metwally Mostafa Selim highlighted that Sinai will always remain a symbol of pride and dignity, noting that celebrating such national occasions helps revive national values and deepen loyalty and belonging among younger generations.
Professor Dr. Mohamed Abdel Hamid Shehab also pointed out that the liberation of Sinai represents a unique model of integration between military, popular, and political efforts, emphasizing that regaining the land was the result of great sacrifices and continuous efforts. In his remarks, the Military Advisor to Damietta Governorate congratulated attendees on the 44th anniversary of Sinai Liberation, describing it as an enduring national epic that began with the October War of 1973 and continued through political and diplomatic efforts until the full recovery of Sinai in 1982, followed by the return of Taba in 1989. He affirmed that the Armed Forces will always remain the shield and sword of the nation, calling on youth to draw inspiration from the spirit of victory and contribute to building the Homeland through knowledge, discipline, and hard work.
At the conclusion of the speeches, Professor Dr. Hemdan Rabie Al-Metwally expressed his appreciation to the organizers and attendees, noting that such celebrations aim to raise awareness among new generations about the greatness of their national history. He praised the proactive vision of the political leadership in supporting and developing the capabilities of the Armed Forces, stressing the importance of youth awareness of modern challenges, especially fourth-generation warfare, and the need to be equipped with knowledge while rationalizing resource consumption. He also encouraged students to verify information and understand history accurately, as they are the leaders of the future.
The celebration included a variety of artistic performances under the supervision of Professor Dr. Hoda Abdel Nabi, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Specific Education for Community Service and Environmental Development, and training by Professor Dr. Mona El-Agamy, Professor in the Department of Music Education at the Faculty. Student Mohamed Abu El-Khair performed a religious chant, while the Faculty of Specific Education team presented a national medley about Sinai. Several students also performed patriotic songs, including “Balady Ya Balady” by Mahmoud Gomaa, “Hena Masr” by the University Choir, “Bilady Ya Ahl El-Bilad” by Menna Abu Rashed, and “Om El-Dunya” by Mohamed Atta. The event concluded with the song “Masr El-Youm Fi Eid” performed by Yara Mahfouz from Damietta National University.
This celebration comes within the framework of Damietta University’s national role in commemorating national occasions, strengthening the spirit of belonging and loyalty among students, and honoring the heroism and sacrifices of the Egyptian people and its Armed Forces.
